Fast, overall experience was as good as could be expected.
Refinancing in Texas (with our weird real estate laws)- Better was great throughout the process. It took about five weeks overall.
Their “digital-native” platform is great for busy Millennials (or others :) ) such as myself who don’t have time to navigate a ton of phone trees to speak with someone, and haven’t seen a fax machine in years to submit docs (other banks are somehow still doing business this way!)
Better assigns a team of people for three phases of the process- a
“Mortgage Expert”, who helps with initial review up until rate lock; a
“Processing Expert”, who shepherds the loan through underwriting and doc verifications; and a
“Closing Expert” who takes it from underwriting to Close.
My team was great, though the title company suggested was a bit of a mess (I could have comparison-shopped for that if I’d wanted to though).
I’d also like to mention that I was refinancing amidst the Fannie/Freddie “0.5% Market Risk Fee” announcement. I’d locked my rate with that fee implicitly included, but after it was announced it wouldn’t apply to any loans until December 2020 (I closed in Sept), Better.com emailed to mention I should expect a check with a refund for 0.5% of my loan amount! It would’ve been very easy (and expected) for them to just keep that fee. Kudos to them for that.
