Bread's inadequate customer service
A kitchen renovation project that I have been working on for one month with CliqStudio has been a first-rate experience in terms of professionalism, responsiveness, and agreeability. By contrast, I wish I could say the same about my shorter, exhaustive, and frustrating experience with their financing partner, Bread. That experience has left me with a very negative opinion of Bread customer service.
Despite being pre-qualified by Bread for a 12-months 0% financing promotion, having an excellent credit history (845 average score based on two rating agencies), providing name, address, date of birth, social security number, driver’s license proof of identity, and answering four identity verification questions, my credit request was denied. The reason given was Bread’s inability to verify my identity. This is not only perplexing, given the identity verification items of information I submitted and my excellent credit history, but it also reveals Bread's inflexible identity verification process.
A subsequent 18-minute conversation with a customer service manager named Mickey, requesting a review of the decision, albeit courteous, proved to be futile. She finally agreed reluctantly to pass on my request to the Director of Customer Service for a call to discuss this matter. However, given several mentions that she would be unable to guarantee that I would receive a return call (imagine that from a customer service manager), I am not confident that my request will be acted upon expeditiously or even reach the intended person, and time is of the essence for this project.
I was particularly annoyed and frustrated by Mickey’s dogmatic and inflexible manner. Considering that I had been operating on only two hours of sleep the previous night, I suppose it is possible I might have inadvertently answered one of the four credit verification questions incorrectly. However, as if she couldn't be bothered, she did not even suggest another form of identity verification and refused to submit my credit request for another review.
I believe this reflected a rigidity that resulted in very inadequate customer service. Therefore, I have rated my experience with Bread, 1/5, with 5 being the highest. So, buyers beware and consider other sources of financing to avoid any last-minute lender surprises that may be associated with an otherwise more favorable merchant shopping experience.
